The Meriwether Vindicator, August 10, 1922Mrs. James W. Estes leaves earth for Heaven. Friday of last week Mrs. James W. Estes (Marietta) died suddenly from an attack of heart trouble at her home at Gay. While the death angel came unannounced and unexpected the summons found her ready to go meet her God. Mrs. Estes was the wife of Mr. J. W. Estes and one of the saintliest souls of earth. She was of the highest type of noble wifehood and a mother in Israel. In her quiet and unostentatious manner, she wrought for her Master and along the pathway she walked there are pretty flowers she planted in human hearts, which exhale fragrance of her beautiful life. In the home, around the fireside, the light of her life shone the brightest and touched untold hundreds. It was a hospitable home and she was the queen of it. Thousands have been entertained there and felt the influence of her splendid womanhood. During the fifty-three years this noble lady and her good husband lived together, the latch string literally hung on the outside of their front door and the home was a fountain of the old-fashioned southern hospitality, which flowed spontaneously and charmed many hundreds of souls. Mrs Estes was a helpmate to her husband. For more than a half century they walked hand in hand, in adversity and prosperity, from poverty to wealth, in sickness, and health, in shadow and sunshine, and the writer can truly say he never saw a happier couple. They were absolutely congenial and their home a model of felicity. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. T.H. Maxwell assisted by Judge M. Z. O'neal. Mrs. Estes was a member of the Methodist Church. The husband Mr. James W. Estes, five sons, Messers A.N., A.F., H.R., J.L., and Eddie B. Estes of Gay and one daughter Mrs. Nesbit Harper of Atlanta, are left in sorrow, and with them the sympathy of a host of friends will abide.
William Jackson Estes
Dresden Enterprise, Dec 6, 1912
Contributed by Sharon Richmond HumesWilliam J. Estes was born near Raleigh, NC, Sep 11, 1827; departed this life Dec 1, 1912; aged 85 years. Sixty-four years ago, he was married to Francis Lawerence. To this union were born 13 children, 11 boys and two girls. Out of this large family of children, seven boys and two girls survive him. Nearly eighteen years ago his beloved companion was called to her reward, and since that time Brother Estes has made his home among his children, but most of this time he has lived with his youngest daughter, Mrs. Mowery.
Brother Estes in his early boyhood professed religion and joined the M. E. Church, South. For nearly seventy years he lived a faithful, consecrated christian life, and today he is enjoying his rich reward of a long and well spent life. Brother Estes was always delighted to attend church service, and was especially fond of the song service. Oh, how much he will be missed from his accustomed place in the "amen corner."
Brother Estes was a good citizen and neighbor, a kind, loving, patient father and noble christian gentleman. What more could be said of him? Surely the influence of this long and noble life will be felt in this community and old Mt. Vernon church for many years to come. Dear children and grandchildren, look up throught your tears and thank God that you had a father and grandfather who strove to walk in the fooprints of his blessed Lord and Master. May each of you in this dark hour of sorrow and grief resolve to emulate his noble life, and resolve deep down in your hearts to meet father and grandfather in that haven of eternal rest where there will be no more sorrow, no more sickness, no more death and no more separation. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. B. S. McLemore in the presence of a very large concourse of sorrowing friends and relatives.
Dresden Enterprise, Dec 20, 1912 The following continuation of William J. Estes' obituary was received last week too late to be appended to same.
His seven boys Tom, Sam, Jim, Ed, Homer, Ben and Will all lived near him, the farthest of anyone being at Martin. The two daughters Mrs. Bell Duke and Mrs. Leona Mowery were always near him, which was a great comfort and blessing in his old age. He has 59 grand-children and 25 great-grand-children. He had eight daughter's-in-law.
There are few men in this section of the state that have as many descendants as he (101). They fill many walks of life. Some are farmers, school teachers, telegraph operators, wholesale drummers, machinists, carpenters, university students, civil engineers, and others carry their share of life's burdens in different ways. These men will never hesitate to say that they are his decendants, for not one of them has ever heard any living man or woman say a harmful, or unkind thing of him. He was very undemonstrative in his ways and said nothing of things that did not concern him. If every one of us were to do as he had done, this life would be far more pleasant for us and those with whom we come in contact.
Martha I. (Estes) Duke
Dresden Enterprise, Jul 8, 1921
Contributed by Sharon Richmond HumesMartha I. Estes was born October, 1851; died Jul 2, 1921; age 69 years. She was the first born of her father's family, which consisted of 13 children, 11 boys and two girls. She was the oldest and her only sister, Lomie, was the youngest.
She professed faith in Christ while a child and joined the M. E. church South, but after her marriage to James K. Duke on Feb 13, 1868, she with her husband, joined the Cumberland Presbyterian church at Hopewell, where she remained a faithful and devoted member until her death.
Sister Duke lived a faithful and true life for her Lord, her church and her family. She was good to everybody. Her husband passed away 10 years ago, leaving her quite lonely and to fight the battles of life alone; but with the four splendid and faithful sons and their sister, Mrs. Alice Brooks, who was attentative to all her wants, she made the efforts through life until the Master said 'it is enough,' and then she went to sleep in Jesus.
She leaves seven brothers and one sister, four sons and one daughter, with several grand children and many neices and nephews and relatives, to mourn their loss. She had long been a sufferer, but with her faith she was able to bear the same with christian fortitude and without murmuring.
Her funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. R. H. Jackson, in the presence of a very large congregation at Mt. Vernon, where her body was buried to await the resurrection. Her last days had the never-failing care of her son, Rubert, and his wife, Miss Ethel, who did all they could for her comfort. The friends brought a large tribute which bespeaks their love for the good woman. -- Her Pastor.
Dresden Enterprise, Jul 22, 1921 Card of Thanks. -- We want the good neighbors and kind friends to know that we profoundly appreciate their many kind deeds to our dear mother, Mrs. Jas. K. Duke, in her last illness and for the beautiful flowers that covered her grave and the sweet words of sympathy since her death. We also thank the attentive physician who was ever prompt to respond to our call, doing all in his power to relieve the pain. We shall never forget these things, and pray God's richest blessing upon you. -- The Children.
