"THE DOGS OF WAR"
1942---1945

Prior to being sent overseas, World War Two soldiers and sailors were stationed at US bases outside the continental limits where they received advanced training. Tax exempt cigarettes were sold to these servicemen at their Post or Base Exchange. Camels, Luckies, and Chesterfields cost five cents a pack or fifty cents a carton, but there could be a string attached. In order to buy one carton of their preferred brand at the Puunene Naval Air Station Exchange on the Hawaiian Island of Maui, smokers also had to buy two cartons of an off-brand. When it was time for a serviceman to ship out, oftentimes these cartons of unwanted cigarettes were left in wall or foot lockers for the less discriminating.
