STAR STRUCK STROLLERS
1916---ca. 1937
The Standard Tobacco Company of Virginia introduced their "Natural Leaf" Strollers Cigarettes in 1916. The Tobacco Products Corporation of New York City acquired Strollers in the early 1920's, and sold soft packs of fifteen cigarettes for a dime. Beginning 1922, Tobacco Products inserted a T85 Movie Stars card in each pack as a free premium. Advertising included both newspaper and point-of-sale ads. During the 1930's, The American Tobacco Company manufactured Strollers in Durham, North Carolina. ATCo continued to sell fifteen Strollers cigarettes for a dime, even though the brand now had to compete with the ten cent economy smokes. These inexpensive ten centers of the Great Depression came twenty cigarettes to the pack, and were popular because of the price. The handsome Strollers package pictured below was made during 1937.
That's Irene Castle pictured on the Strollers ad. Irene and her husband Vernon were sensational ballroom dancers. Irene also starred in several silent films.
