FRAGRANT ROSE CIGARETTES
1883---ca. 1898
The D. E. Rose Company of New York used romantic sounding brandnames for their cigarettes that suggested an exotic Spanish or Caribbean travel itinerary. Royal Old Spanish, Old King--Long Havana Filled, Rio Grande, West India, Bouquet, Empress, and Rose cigarettes, plus D. E. Rose Cheroots, were made for sophisticated urban smokers who appreciated a fragrant Cuban or Manila leaf. Rose made his cigarettes, cigars, and cheroots at Fulton and Front Streets in New York City. These low volume smokes were promoted with free tobacco cards picturing popular 1880's stage actresses. Depending on the size of the card, these little beauties were either inserted into a pack or given free at the point of sale.
I would like to thank my good friend and fellow tobacco historian Joe Parker of Prince Frederick, Maryland for sharing his beautiful D. E. Rose Victorian trade card, and for his help in gathering information about this small tobacco manufacturer. I also want to thank Michael Tedesco of Little Beauties cigarette and tobacco cards for sharing his Old King insert card.
