"THE MAN WHO SHAPED AMERICA"
1893---1986

Raymond Loewy was an influential American industrial designer responsible for the sleek modern look of railroad locomotives, the Studebaker Avanti auto, business logos, and cigarette packs. Mr. Loewy's design philosophy was that every object has an ideal form that expresses function with economy and grace. Loewy's circa 1960 Japanese Peace Cigarette pack is a good example of this principle. Moreover, when George Washington Hill, President of The American Tobacco Company and the manufacturer of Lucky Strike Cigarettes heard that Loewy didn't think much of the cigarette pack graphics, a $50,000 bet was on. Loewy won the wager when George Hill liked the 'cleaned up' version of the Lucky Strike label that Loewy created.
