RAMESES--AS TIMELESS AS EGYPT
1895---1997
The beautiful blue Rameses package with its colorful Egyptian ornamentation was introduced to smokers in 1895 by the two Stephano brothers of Philadelphia. Rameses the cigarette was named after Rameses II, the Egyptian pharaoh whose temple at Abu Simbel features four giant 67-foot-high statues of himself. Most early Rameses advertising used an Egyptian theme. Magazine ads pictured the colossal images of Egyptian antiquity or the artwork used to decorate the early temples. Point-of-sale advertising included small change mat rugs woven to mimic the colorful carpets that Muslims say their prayers on.
