OPERA STAR A FAN OF EGYPTIAN PRETTIEST
1900---1920
Old photographs of the great Italian tenor Enrico Caruso will often picture him under a cloud of cigarette smoke. Mr. Caruso was a two pack a day (ten cigarettes per pack) smoker who liked to puff on an oval Egyptian style cigarette which he placed in an elegant tortoise-shell holder. This famous tenor and personality had a unique voice, some of which he attributed to his smoking. Caruso wouldn't perform in any opera house that didn't let him smoke, so one fire prone German theatre stipulated that when he smoked, there had to be a fireman with a bucket of water standing nearby. Enrico Caruso could sing anywhere in the world he wanted to, and could afford any brand of cigarettes his taste buds desired. But he liked to sing in America more than any other country, and he preferred the American made Schinasi Bros. brand of Egyptian Prettiest Cigarettes.
The two Schinasi brothers produced three brands of cigarettes. Egyptian Prettiest was their least expensive smoke. The modernized bright green box was made in 1938.
