OMAROMAR
1902---ca. late 1960's
That's correct, Omar spells Aroma. George Washington Hill started his legendary career with The American Tobacco Company by having his salesmen use a pencil to illustrate the trick to retailers. Omar was ATCo's premium Turkish blend entry, and it competed successfully with Fatima, Osman, and Zubelda. Wood framed and tin self-framed signs plus gorgeous magazine ads were used to promote Omar. Packaging was the standard 'cup' soft pack of twenty, a tin flat 50, tin or cardboard round 100's, and a deluxe tin that held 140 cigarettes (40 free when you buy 100). Omar continued to be manufactured until the late 1960's. Distribution was limited, though. In the many stores that sold cigarettes in Hollywood, California at that time, only one still carried Omar. Fitting, Omar's last hurrah there was the Owl Drug Store at Hollywood and Vine. "....... and Thou Beside me singing in the Wilderness-Oh Wilderness were Paradise enow! Omar"
