AN OASIS TO PLEASE THE EYE
1913
For over 2000 years camels have been used to transport trade goods. The camel caravan depicted on the Egyptian Oasis box pictured below has found a desert oasis, almost in the shadows of the great pyramids. What a fitting picture for an Egyptian style oval cigarette, or is it? Three of the four major cigarette manufacturers that were the successor companies to James Duke's tobacco trust, produced inexpensive 'Turkish blend' brands following the trust's 1911 dissolution. Selling ten for a nickel, these low cost smokes contained just a smidgen of expensive Turkish tobacco, but pack graphics and brand names such as Mecca, Hassan, Nebo, and Oasis suggested otherwise. These make-believe Turks shouldn't be confused with the deluxe straight-Turkish tobacco brands such as Egyptian Deities and Egyptienne Luxury, which often sold for as much as twenty-five cents a box of ten. The Egyptian Oasis Cigarette was made by the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company beginning 1913, and introduced to American smokers with a newspaper advertising campaign.
