THE BLUE EAGLE
1933

It was a blue eagle that helped cast a little light on a very bleak Great Depression. The Blue Eagle was the symbol of the National Recovery Administration (N.R.A.) Launched in the summer of 1933, this federal fair trade program was part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. It received national support and exposure with a parade on New York City's 5th Avenue. Additional publicity included Hollywood movie starlets who had the N.R.A. eagle sunburned onto their backs. A California cigarette manufacturer located in Berkeley displayed the small bird on each of his packs.
