"EMBARRASSED? BE NONCHALANT"
ca. 1927---1930's
Beginning 1927, the P. Lorillard Company advertised their Murad cigarette with amusing cartoons titled "Embarrassing Moments." Cartoonists drew smokers caught in awkward situations, and the advertising message suggested that they could keep their cool by lighting up a Murad. Lorillard strayed from the traditional Murad Egyptian graphics with a modern art deco flat 50 that featured one of the cartoons on the inside of the lid. Between the two world wars, what was perceived as modern in the design of buildings and art objects was known as art deco. This style featured clean lines and pure color, with none of the fussiness of the Victorian era.
