A GODLY BEAST GUARDS MILTIADES' CIGARETTES
1924---1928

By the early 1920's Egyptian style cigarettes had lost their appeal for most American smokers. However, interest in all things Egyptian was rekindled when British archeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tuthankhamen's tomb in 1922. By May 1926 Miltiades Melachrino Inc. was in financial trouble. Aaron Berkowitz was now president, but the small company was in the hands of receivers. Berkowitz changed the company name to Miltiades Ltd., and did report a good Christmas business for Miltiades Cigarettes, but the doors were about to close forever on another speciality straight-Turkish tobacco cigarette manufacturer. There were two designs used for Miltiades Cigarettes. Both relied on that ancient sentinel, the Sphinx, for a mascot.
