"CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF FLAVOR"
1954---2004

Once manufacturer Philip Morris (PM) decided on a solid red color as a replacement for the red-and-white diagonal stripes used for the 1954 Texas test-market campaign, the basic Marlboro graphics haven't changed. Pictured below left is a box produced for the 1954 test, while below center is the 1955 version that replaced it. These first Marlboro flip-top boxes were labeled a "long size," which is 5mm shorter than the 85mm king size brands. The color of the PM crest or coat-of-arms was changed to gold in early 1958 to signify an advancement in the Marlboro filter-tip design. The 2004 Marlboro pictured below right has a printed outer plastic wrap that announces "50 Years of Flavor," but the box itself closely resembles the version first used in January 1955.
