"A PUFF FROM HOLLYWOOD"
1922---ca. 1942

Tobacconist Mark Lickter was the pioneer cigarette manufacturer in Hollywood, California. Lickter sold his cigarettes from two fashionable stores located in the courtyards of Sid Grauman's ornate film palaces, the Egyptian and Chinese Theatres. During the 1920's all of Lickter's smokes came packaged in boxes made from California redwood. These were touted as a natural humidor for his quality brands. Lickter made his cigarettes in the Egyptian Theatre Smoke Shop, and this 'factory' was officially known as Factory 55, 6th Dist. State of Calif. Claiming that his smokes were internationally famous, Lickter advertised his dainty demitasse size cigarette, A Puff from Hollywood, as "the size now used by H.M. the Prince of Wales." Other Lickter brands included Hollywood Secrets, El Capitan, and The Ritz. When the Chinese Theatre opened in 1927, Lickter created and Sid Grauman appointed "Qu-Tee" colored Chinese cigarettes as the official cigarette of the new theatre. Mark Lickter helped set fashion during Hollywood's heyday, the 1920s and 30s.
