SAN FRANCISCO'S RUSSIAN CIGARITOS
1860s---ca. 1953

Pictured on the poster below right is a dapper fellow dressed for an evening of San Francisco nightlife. I don't think this flashy dude had a name, but he was the mascot for Imperiales Cigarettes. Imperiales were first made by The John Bollman Company beginning 1896. Mr. Bollman began making his superior Russian Cigaritos in San Francisco during the 1860's. His business, Factory 171, 1st Dist. State of Calif., was located at No. 510 Broadway. Ownership of The John Bollman Co. passed first to The American Tobacco Company monopoly in 1900, then to the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. The Imperiales Russian style mouthpiece cigarettes were said to be a favorite of author Jack London.

I would like to thank my friend Jack Tillmany for sharing his 1909 photograph of a San Francisco street scene.
