"HARLEY THUNDER "
1987---1997
Milwaukee's Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company has made a lot of extra money by licensing their well recognized name to manufacturers of beer, a wine cooler named Scooter Juice, cigarettes, and many other consumer products. The Lorillard Tobacco Company first tested Harley-Davidson Cigarettes in Eureka, Calif. and Indianapolis beginning September 1987. The macho black pack picturing the famous Harley wings wasn't a big seller, but did do well enough for the test market to be expanded to Portland, Oregon in April 1990. The test markets were further expanded to Illinois in 1992 and Maryland in 1993. Lorillard approached Harley-Davidson for approval of a new 1993 national ad campaign picturing a Darth Vader or black knight looking character riding a motorcycle. The new ads were created by Avrett, Free & Ginsberg, a Manhattan advertising agency that also had Lorillard's Kent Cigarette account. Harley management felt that the ads would appeal to teenagers, and blocked the campaign. According to Tim Hoelter, H-D's vice president, the motorcycle company wanted to avoid tobacco litigation and their goal was to "close the barn door before the horse runs away." The two companies sued each other, and the end result was the look-alike 1997 Maverick 'by the makers of Harley-Davidson cigarettes' Cigarettes. Before Harley-Davidson Cigarettes wound up in hog heaven, though, they were marketed in about 38 states and exported to several foreign countries. The white flip-top box that I picture below, was exported to Japan.
Many thanks to my good friend Jack Tillmany for sharing his "Harley Thunder" ad.
