GLOBE MADE MOUTHPIECE CIGARETTES
1880's

The pretty cigarette girl that I have pictured below, plus 189 additional employees, produced the different Globe Tobacco Company smoking and chewing products during the second half of the 19th Century. Globe was one of the five biggest tobacco manufacturers in Detroit, and before automobiles tobacco was this city's major employer. The large Globe factory was located at 407 East Fort Street, and this old brick structure still stands and is now being used as an office building. In 1871, five Detroit businessmen founded Globe, including Mr. Hiram Walker, a gentleman now known for booze. Globe's Gold Flake Cigarettes featured individual amber colored glass-like mouthpieces. The Gold Flake brandname refers to the flake cut bright golden flue-cured Virginia tobaccos that the cigarette was made from.

By the way, the slide-and-shell Gold Flake box, which is typical of 1880's cigarette packs, states that it was patented March 5th, 1872, Munson & Co., New Haven, Conn. This is a good ten years before James Duke began packaging his different brands in this more protective style container.
