BETWEEN THE TIGRIS AND THE EUPHRATES
1902---mid 1950s
Author Chris Mullen had some fun with the graphics used on Egyptienne Straights Cigarettes in his classic and colorful Cigarette Pack Art. Mullen identified the Assyrian Winged Bull used as a graphic symbol for Straights, then went on to state: "stands on a plinth with the usual ludicrous hieroglyphs derived from feathers, exclamation marks and musical notation, headed by a bird staring at the sun out to sea." The very recognizable neatly curled hair and beards of the warrior-kings from the Mesopotamian Cradle of Civilization, does seem an odd choice to represent an Egyptian style cigarette brand. Egyptienne Straights, along with Pall Mall Originals and Melachrino, were the luxury brands produced by The American Tobacco Company until discontinued in the mid 1950's.
