HAND ROLLED---THE EARLIEST BRANDS
1874---1881
At the end of the Civil War 18 to 20 million cigarettes a year were hand rolled by immigrants who worked in small New York City tobacco shops. By the late 1870's six large manufacturers controlled 75% of the industry: Kimball of Rochester, Allen & Ginter of Richmond, Kinney Bros. and Goodwin of New York, plus Marburg Bros. and Felgner which were two Baltimore firms. John Allen first made Richmond Gem in 1874. The label pictured was used before Major Lewis Ginter had become a part-owner. Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York is pictured on the blue federal tax stamp still glued to the Virgin Queen label. The Erie Canal was Clinton's brainchild, and this important achievement led to the selection of his portrait for the 1878 tax stamp. Before the stamp was discontinued in June 1959, Clinton's portrait had been printed almost 500 billion times, more often than any other person in the world.
