THE LURE OF LACE
1954
Marilyn Monroe posed in the nude for this famous photograph. The original 1951 calendar was entitled "Golden Dreams," and it helped launch her Hollywood career. While Marilyn didn't own a copy of the famous calendar, she wasn't embarrassed by it either. When entertaining American GIs during the Korean War, Marilyn happened upon a giant blow-up of the calendar decorating a mess hall. Not expecting her there, the soldiers hung their heads, embarrassed for her. But Marilyn put them at ease by thanking them for posting her picture in a place of honor. Marilyn's black lace nightee in this Diplomat Cigarette version is an overprint. This slightly more modest rendition doesn't really hide much of the allure of this beautiful woman. Diplomat Cigarettes were introduced to the smoking public in 1952. By the late 1950's Diplomat was billed as "The Safer Cigarette." This safer cigarette didn't attract much of a following, but it did catch the eye of B.A.T Canada. In 1958 a few packs of Diplomat were analyzed in their research lab, and the conclusion was that the safer cigarette slogan was misleading. Sales were just enough for Diplomat to continue to be made until the early 1960's.
