CRIMSON TIPS FOR THE LIPS
1880---1954
The post World War One young lady demanded, and was granted freedoms, that just a few short years before would have branded her a hussy. Fashion conscious women were wearing shorter skirts, bobbing their hair, and unabashedly smoking cigarettes--in public! The Victorian taboo against women smokers lasted until 1926. After that time advertising campaigns often featured testimonials of famous women such as movie star Jean Harlow and aviatrix Amelia Earhart. Before World War One the few brands aimed especially at women were generally perfumed, gold tipped, and dainty. Satin Straight Cut dates from the 1880's. Packaged in a satin bag, this early brand predates by ninety years Virginia Slims' 1968 "You've Come a Long Way, Baby" advertising campaign.
