POP ART FROM PHILIP MORRIS
1991---ca. 1994
The Collector's Choice Americana and Skyline series of cigarettes from Philip Morris were sold in a plastic container that the manufacturer called a Penta-Pak. These unusual Penta-Pak cartons contained five flip-top boxes totaling 100 cigarettes. Each of the packs had a different brand name and colorful pop art graphics. Collector's Choice was originally sold in select Southern California locations beginning December 1991. The stackable Penta-Paks were displayed on a retailer's counter, and advertising suggested that they were "a unique five pack gift assortment." A special tote bag with a rope handle allowed smokers to get their Penta-Pak home in style. After the limited area introductory launch, both series of Collector's Choice, and still in the Penta-Pak, were available through G. A. Andron catalog sales.
The two Collector's Choice scans above come from the 1993 edition of the G. A. Andron & Co., Inc. catalog. Philip Morris marketed Collector's Choice as a "Great Low Price!" brand during 1994. Collector's Choice were now sold as the Skyline and Vista Series, with five new brand names added to each set. The Penta-Pak was replaced by a standard ten pack carton featuring a see-through window, and sold for $12.69 plus tax. A third and final set, known as the Medley Series, was available December 1994. Five different menthol soft packs, two of each to a carton, all featured art with a musical instruments theme.
