A CENTURY OF PROGRESS
1933---1934
Located on the shore of Lake Michigan, the Century of Progress exposition was held during 1933-34 at the height of the Great Depression. This fair was dedicated to what science invented and industry produced, and showcased the City of Chicago's growth over the preceding 100 years. What better way to highlight progress than to decorate with a style of modern art known as 'art deco'. Perceived as progressive, the unique rounded corners and banded stripes that epitomized art deco buildings was also used on fair advertising and souvenirs. The rare exposition cigarette pack was produced for, and distributed by, Stanley Freres, Ltd., N. Wells Street, Chicago. With permission of the Chicago World's Fair, these commemorative cigarettes were made in Factory 13, Second district New York. This small manufacturer was the Smith-Kirkpatrick & Company, maker of White Spot Cigarettes.
