CRAZY ABOUT CARS
1909---1973
An enthusiastic crowd with a need for speed watched the Vanderbilt Cup race while enjoying a Murad cigarette in this 1909 poster issued by The American Tobacco Company. New inventions like the automobile, electric light, radios and airplanes quickly found their way into cigarette advertising. Manufacturers spent a lot of advertising dollars to keep their cigarettes fashionably modern. Speed meant progress, and the auto meant speed. Fast looking cars were also used for pack graphics. Zipper and Toppers went that extra nine yards by featuring very sleek automobiles, and in the case of the Toppers pack, an attractive art deco design. The Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation’s Viceroy brand sponsored Formula One racing in the early 1970s. In October 1973 B&W offered their used race cars to the public. For one Viceroy carton end panel and $75,000 you could buy one of the cars that they had used in their last Indianapolis 500 effort.
