THE BLOCH BROS. TOBACCO COMPANY
1879---2005
The two Bloch brothers of Wheeling, West Virginia are best remembered for their Mail Pouch Tobacco. Mail Pouch was a popular chew advertised on thousands of barns, most of which were located in the rural Ohio Valley. Each barn had an end or side painted with the tobacco logo. The brothers began manufacturing stogies in 1879 as a side-line to Samuel Bloch's wholesale grocery business. It was discovered that the left-over stogie clippings could be flavored and packaged in a paper bag, and then sold as chewing tobacco. This "scrap" became so popular that the manufacture of stogies was discontinued. The Bloch Bros. Tobacco Company then bought clippings from cigar makers. By the early 1930's clippings had become scarce, so quality whole leaf from Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Connecticut was substituted. Aaron and Samuel Bloch also made a few cigarettes. Low volume brands such as Arrow and Wizard were produced beginning 1919. I'm pleased to report that there is no evidence that the Bloch's cigarettes were made from tobacco clippings.
The wonderful barn photograph was snapped by Elmer Napier of West Virginia. More of Elmer's barn photos found here. Thanks for sharing, Elmer.
