A WELCOME NUDE
1883

Before the beginning of the 20th Century, it's was rare to find a naked lady used to advertise any consumer product. The 1883 poster pictured below was probably tucked into a dark corner of a 'men only' saloon. The Welcome Cigarette was a product of the Goodwin firm, a pioneer tobaccco manufacturer located in New York City. This would have been prior to the 1890 merger that resulted in The American Tobacco Company trust, and the subsequent closure of Goodwin's fairly small factory. Goodwin's major brands, Old Judge and Gypsy Queen, were heavily promoted with free baseball insert cards and the larger Victorian trade cards. Their less popular Welcome seemed to target smokers who either couldn't afford a manly cigar or who just appreciated fine art. For those of you with inquisitive minds, no, the poster isn't meant to be folded in two to produce a double-sided sign.
