VIRGIN QUEEN HONORED IN TOLEDO
ca. 1879
About 1879, tobacconist and businessman Charles Messinger of Toledo, Ohio named his new cigarette after England's Queen Elizabeth 1. Nicknamed the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth (1558-1603) was a savvy feminist who chose not to marry, but to lead men as their monarch during a grand period of English history. Elizabeth's 45 year reign included sponsoring voyages of discovery to America, and colonization in Asia when she established the East India Company. The pipe smoking explore Walter Raleigh was one of many males who bowed to the regal Elizabeth, as did Sir Francis Drake, who has a bay just north of San Francisco named after him. The Chas. R. Messinger company is best remembered for Indian Brand Chewing Tobacco. Located on Summit Street in Toledo, this small manufacturer of smoking and chewing tobacco was officially known as Factory No. 1, 10th District Ohio. In 1873, Charles Messinger took control of the company founded 1847 in Centerville, Ohio, by father-in-law Calvin Bronson. This old and established firm became the Toledo Tobacco Works circa 1886 when William H. Harrison became proprietor.
Many thanks to my good friend Joe Parker, a tobacco historian from Maryland, for sharing his Chas. Messinger information.
