A FAMOUS STAGE ACTRESS
1901
James Duke's huge tobacco monopoly bought Sotirios Anargyros' small New York City cigarette manufacturing company in 1900. Anargyros had originally introduced his Turkish Trophies Cigarettes in 1892. Duke's new all-Turkish tobacco subsidiary re-introduced Turkish Trophies in 1901 with an advertising campaign highlighted by a set of large premium cards that pictured well known stage actresses. These 25 cards are known to collectors as the T-1 series. The prefix 'T' is used for 20th Century tobacco issues. The exquisite paintings by artist F. M. Spiegle makes this set a favorite among collectors. The card below pictures Ethel Barrymore, and commands a premium price because of her stature as an actress, and the well known Barrymore name. Miss Barrymore had her portrait painted many times, but she also liked to draw pictures. In 1908 when Norman Rockwell was fourteen years old, he gave sketching lessons to Ethel Barrymore and one of her girlfriends. This was Rockwell's first job.
Ethel Barrymore was an actress her entire life. Click here to see her pictured on a 1948 Chesterfield ad.
