TURKISH TROPHIES SKETCHES
1902
The delightful Turkish Trophies premium cards pictured below are from a series of one through twelve that collectors have given the unofficial name 'Sketches.' The three cards pictured were drawn and signed by Maurice Biais, Paris 1901. If the style of art seems familiar, consider this: Maurice Biais married Moulin Rouge cabaret dancer Jane Avril. Avril was a friend of, and modeled for, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The Moulin Rouge and other Paris music halls featured a lively dance called the Can-can. A chorus line of high-kicking girls wearing black stocking, ruffled petticoats, colorful dresses and possessing shapely derrières were sketched by Biais and Toulouse-Lautrec during this romantic era of burlesque entertainment. Ooooh la la!
