A SWEET BOUQUET
ca. 1880s
The fantasy that crickets would pull a carriage full of roses, surely commanded many Victorian viewers' attention. Advertising for Sweet Bouquet Cigarettes targeted educated 1880's American women with ads published in journals that were in vogue. Advertising trade cards, like the two pictured below, were a popular collectible that well bred Victorian girls pasted in scrapbooks. This hobby was shared with the rest of their family, and is the reason so many of these wonderful ads have survived. Manufacturer F. Jacoby & Co. of New York City also made Unicum Match-less Cigarettes. Unicum was advertised as: "The Greatest Novelty of the Age."
