THE "SUNNY SOUTH" CIGARETTE
ca. 1880's
Black Americana is the term used for collectibles picturing, or about, African-Americans. This includes everything from slave documents to cookie jar caricatures of "Mammie." Nineteenth Century ethnic art was oftentimes demeaning and cruel. This mean-spirited Victorian humor didn't just lampoon the African-American, but insulted Indians and immigrant groups like the Irish and Chinese. The "Sunny South" Cigarette trade card featured below was issued by manufacturer Allen and Ginter of Richmond, Virginia, and is fairly tame compared to most of the Black Americana advertising cards promoting patent medicines.
