SANCHO, THE SQUIRE FROM LA MANCHA
1879---1888
Years of smoking the Sancho All-Tobacco Cigarette seems to have made a few inroads on the face of the Spaniard pictured below. H. Wilkens and Company manufactured and marketed his regional cigarettes in Baltimore, Maryland beginning 1879. Sanchos were sold in wood boxes of 100 featuring quant art picturing Don Quixote charging the windmill with his faithful Sancho watching. These old-timers were made in Factory No. 184, District of Maryland. Throughout most of the 1880's Wilkens made Sancho, Airy Fairy, Havana, and Cinnamon, his only cigarette brands, but was best known for his much more popular Seal of Virginia Tobacco. In 1888 the H. Wilkens Company was acquired by Baltimore rival Marburg Bros. tobacco company. Squire Sancho Panza is the only advertising that I've seen for any of the low volume Wilkens made cigarettes.
Tobacco historian Joe Parker of Prince Frederick, MD provided some of the Wilkens information that I used for this page. Thank you Joe.
