Smokers like to laugh, and laughter is a form of communications. Humor is often hurtful and usually based on misfortune. Cruel caricatures were common during the 1880's, but the Allen & Ginter company issued several sets of Victorian trade cards picturing playful animals with human expressions that not only didn't poke fun at anyone, but were extremely well drawn and a pleasure to look at.
