OUR LITTLE DARLINGS
1880---1889

Little Darlings, one and all. Some early cigarette manufacturers capitalized on the fact that drawings of children caught the public's attention. Rosie cheeked little boys and girls, along with cherubs, could, and did, sell a lot of tobacco products. The dark side of young children was seldom pictured in the Victorian trade cards issued by tobacco companies. However, other manufacturers of consumer products would sometimes have kids dumping goldfish into boiling water or other shameful situations considered humorous by some of our forefathers. Allen & Ginter's Our Little Beauties Cigarettes were made from Turkish and Virginia tobaccos, and were the successor to their Our Little Darlings Cigarettes. An 1881 catalog states that Our Little Darlings were made from pure Havana tobacco, were tobacco wrapped, and sold in cardboard boxes of ten cigarettes. These expensive smokes wholesaled ten dollars per 1000, but the smoker was given a choice of box colors; claro, colorado, or maduro.
