OLD GOLD'S MISS BETTY PETTY
1935---1940

Just before the Second World War began, the P. Lorillard Company promoted their Old Gold Cigarette with advertising drawn by pin-up artist George Petty. Petty's Old Gold ads were usually published in Esquire, a men's magazine. Ads produced in the mid-1930's included the cartoon squire that was the magazine's mascot. Each of these early ads had a different title that poked some fun at the round little guy. "Shanghaied by a Silly Salt" was used for the April, 1935 magazine version of the point-of-sale ad pictured below. By 1938, the squire had been dropped. Leggy and sleek in their skin-tight evening gowns, Petty's fantasy women were truly "The Treasure of them All."
