RUTH CONNECTS IN THE DARK
1928
"The House That Ruth Built" wasn't tobaccoland, but Yankee Stadium. Babe Ruth's September 1928 testimonial for Old Gold Cigarettes followed on the heels of the 1927 Yankees--a team that Mrs. Babe Ruth called: "the greatest baseball team that ever played and my husband was the greatest player on that team." Square of face and body, home-run hitter George Herman Ruth, Jr. was a baseball figure that pitchers feared---he was walked 2,056 times. There was another side to Ruth, though, and off the field the bluff and blunt slugger had a knack for quickly turning shy kids into friends. In a 1959 article written for The Saturday Evening Post, Mrs. Ruth stated that being labeled an incorrigible as a very young child gave Babe an affinity for kids in distress. Ruth went out of his way to visit many, many sick children. The "blindfold" advertising campaign that Lorillard used to promote their new Old Gold was one of two stunts that caught America's Roaring Twenties attention. Old Gold's Voice from the Sky! was broadcast using an amplifed advertising message 3000 feet above major American cities.
