FABRIQUE DE CIGARETTES CAIRO
1878

The rather snobbish trade card pictured below is a circa 1894 advertisement for Nestor Gianaclis. This early and successful Egyptian firm was owned by Nestor Tsanaklis, who made his cigarettes in Cairo. Established in 1878, his first factory was located in the Rue de Mouski. However, it was a former Turkish Pasha's palace in the center of the fashionable Kashr-el-Doubara quarter on Rue Masr-el-Ateeka, that Nestor touted as "a Model of Beauty and Cleanliness." Arabian architecture, a magnificent staircase and entrance hall, elaborate ornamentation, and surrounded by a beautiful garden, made for a most unique cigarette manufactory. A drawing of this grand factory, which opened in 1898, was featured on the back of most Nestor boxes and tins as a part of the label graphics.
