THE LOVELY JERSEY LILLIE
1853---1929
The crimson lily is native to the island of Jersey, and so was red headed Emilie Charlotte LeBreton. Beautiful, witty and intelligent, this proper young Englishwoman married well, charmed famous artists and playwrights, became the toast of London, carried on an affair with Bertie, the future king of England, and then became a very successful stage actress. The astute Mrs. Lillie Langtry made over a million dollars from wages she earned as a star of the stage, by buying vineyards in California, owning a successful stud farm and racing her horses on Jersey, and by breaking the bank in Monaco. Lady Lillie LeBreton Langtry de Bathe, who chose to become an American citizen in 1887, is buried at her father's church on the Isle of Jersey. W. Duke Sons & Co. issued a premium album titled Costumes of All Nations in 1888 that pictured a set of actress insert cards. This spectacular album was printed using stone chromolithography, and featured a full page portrait of the lovely Jersey Lillie.
