MARQUIS OF LORNE
1879

Members of the US Cartophilic Society feel that the first collectible cigarette insert card produced pictured the Marquis of Lorne. Beginning 1878, The Right Hon. Sir John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, K.G., G.C.M.G., Marquis of Lorne, served as the Governor General of Canada. He was appointed by his mother-in-law, England's Queen Victoria. Featuring the marquis' portrait, this scarce card was printed in a brown color on stiff cardboard by Jos. Koehler, N.Y. Inserted into a packet of Marquis of Lorne Cigarettes, this early promotional card was issued in 1879. The larger Victorian trade cards that I have pictured below are important because they mention this very old brand of cigarettes, and identify which compnay distributed them.
