THE LONE FISHERMAN CIGARETTE
ca. 1885
Baltimore, Maryland's five Marburg brothers were known for manufacturing quality smoking tobaccos, cut plug, snuff, and two factory made cigarette brands. The Marburg Bros. tobacco company was located on S. Charles Street, close to the harbor. This mid-sized firm introduced Lone Fisherman and Ten Minutes cigarettes about 1885, and promoted them with quaint trade and insert cards. The Lone Fisherman Cigarette was made from Virginia tobacco, and advertised with a caricature of a dower looking man going fishing. The Ten Minutes Cigarette was made from Havana tobacco, and promoted with the N406 Actors and Actresses free insert cards. The Marburg Bros. company became one of the first acquisitions that James Duke's American Tobacco Company trust acquired in April 1891.
Tobacco historian Joe Parker of Prince Frederick, Maryland provided some of the information I used to write this page.
