EXTRAORDINARY ART FROM LONDON LIFE
1914---1916

Most of the advertising produced for London Life Cigarettes used a genteel sporting events theme. These colorful pre-World War One ads were commissioned by the P. Lorillard Company, who had received London Life upon the dissolution of the American Tobacco Company trust. This straight-Turkish tobacco cigarette was originally made by S. Anargyros in New York City beginning 1892. By 1914, when the ads pictured below were issued, London Life was produced in Jersey City, NJ and advertised with these slogans: "Most Extraordinary," "10 cents here, 10 pence there," and "By appointment to his royal highness, the American gentleman." These two handsome paper ads were also released as a large die-cut cardboard showcard and a self-framed tin sign. By-the-way, that distinguished looking gent wearing the gray coat and black top hat was used as a sort of London Life mascot.
