LITTLE SWEETHEARTS CIGARETTES
ca. 1883

Jointly owned by brothers Alexander, George, and William, the Cameron & Cameron manufacturing firm specialized in smoking tobacco, cigarettes, and cheroots. The Camerons were Scotsmen who had immigrated to Virginia before the start of the Civil War. Altogether, these brothers owned four tobacco factories in Petersburg and Richmond, plus the Wm. Cameron & Co. Ltd. in Adelaide, Australia. Richmond Club, Purity, and Favorite were the Camerons major cigarette brands. Less popular, and probably very expensive, was their Little Sweethearts cigarette. Fifty Little Sweethearts were packaged in a cigar style wood box with a stone lithographed label. Besides the charming young women, the delightful graphics pictures the caduceus of the Greek god Hermes. The caduceus was the magic staff of Hermes (Mercury), the messenger of the gods and the god of commerce. This staff of two entwined snakes topped by wings is often used as a symbol for medicine. However, when the consumer product is tobacco, the caduceus could be misleading.
