Tobacco grown on the banks of Northern California's Russian River won a silver medal at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair. Pioneer Dave Hetzel began experimenting with different types of tobacco seed in 1877. A cigar maker by trade, Mr. Hetzel found that Havana and Connecticut Shade could be grown and cured successfully just twelve miles from the Pacific Ocean. Following in Mr. Hetzel's footsteps, I have planted Burley and Maryland seed with varing degrees of success. I haven't won any medals, and don't expect to, but do enjoy the challenge of growing these regal plants. |
