FOUR-IN-HAND
1887---1888
During the 1880's magazine publishers thought advertising vulgar, and discouraged ads in their low circulation and high-brow publications. Many Americans didn't read magazines, and manufacturers knew this. So, the majority of their advertising dollars went to colorful outdoor posters and signs, and Victorian trade cards. Pictured below are two exceptions: early Century Magazine ads dated December 1887 and February 1888 selling cigarettes. Four-in-Hand is a witty play on words, referring to a team of horses pulling a carriage, and the young lady and her admirers. The Wm. S. Kimball brands being promoted were rarely advertised. Perhaps the ability to now mass produce cigarettes, exceeding demand, was the reason Kimball targeted a new market segment, the literate. Machine made cigarettes were perceived as being inferior to hand-rolled cigarettes. William Kimball's use of magazine ads to appeal to educated smokers for his old fashioned, but high quality hand made brands, made him an astute tobacconist.
