KADEE, "A SWELL TURKISH SMOKE"
1906

At the turn of the 20th century the rules that governed what was permissible in advertising didn't allow for much skin to be shown. A photograph taken by Edward Steichen in 1936, and used in a Woodbury's Facial Soap ad, is considered to be the first photograph of a nude woman to appear in advertising. Pictured below are two circa 1906 Kadee Cigarette advertising cards. This Kadee series featuring nude models poised artistically is so rare that until now only a few cigarette pack collectors even knew they existed. The Kadee Cigarette was made by those imps at the Christian Peper Tobacco Company in Missouri.

Mr. Christian Peper was a St. Louis tobacco millionaire and a family man. His daughter, Dorothy, was an actress who debuted during the 1900-01 season in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Miss Peper used Jane Oaker for her stage name. Many thanks to my good friend Joe Parker for sharing this most interesting St. Louis history.
