PONDERING POLITICS
1912---1913

In 1912 big Bill Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Teddy Roosevelt were the candidates for President of the United States. Fatima, our lady of cigarettes, didn't run for any office, but she was indirectly involved with the election when the Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company (L&M) published a booklet that listed political information for voters to ponder. The colorful Fatima ad below is from that booklet. Before the First World War L&M also supplied handsome leather cigarette cases that advertised their popular Fatima. These cases were given away at elite male gatherings. The example below honors soon-to-be President Wilson at a "smoker" hosted by the prestigious Princeton Alumni Association. A "smoker" isn't necessarily someone who enjoys tobacco. A smoker is also slang for a boxing match; but in this case the smoker was an exclusive dinner for men. Incidentally, my laid-back Fatima ad was also used on outdoor billboards.
