"BUBBLES" SCHINASI
1939
"Hollywood, Calif., Wednesday, January 7th, 1939---'Bubbles' Salmon Schinasi, of the former tobacco family, is to wed Wayne Morris, young film star, according to papers filed here today. Her father, Leon Schinasi, was the son of one of the founders of the firm of Schinasi Bros., which developed into one of the largest Turkish cigarette businesses in the world." Bubbles was a cigarette heiress who gave up her NYC Riverside Drive mansion in order to marry a movie star. From the very beginning, Bubbles' new life in California was exciting. Shortly after their wedding she and Wayne traveled from Hollywood to Dodge City, Kansas on a special train with celebrities Humphrey Bogart, John Garfield, Gilbert Roland, Ann Sheridan, and Errol Flynn. The premier of Flynn's new movie, Dodge City was held in the former cow town amid much Hollywood hoopla. Blond and handsome, her husband Wayne made a lot of action films, but it was during the Second World War when he became a bona fide hero. Wayne Morris was a naval aviator who in dogfights shot down seven planes, sank two enemy destroyers, and a gunboat. Effervescent Bubbles Schinasi was a friend to many famous celebrates. She was also a published author, including a series of children's books, who died in 2005.
A special thank you to tobacco historian Joe Parker of Maryland for sharing his tobacco trade magazine snippet about Bubbles Schinasi so that I can share with you.
