THE PHARAOH AND THE DANCING GIRL
1913
Egyptian dancing girls would alternate between a slow and erotic dance, and one that included wild acrobatic stunts such as splits, cartwheels, somersaults and backbends. Dancing girls wore their hair in a single pigtail. A weighted disk was tied to the end, and her swinging hair then dramatized the rhythm of the dance. Woodwind musicians, along with singers who chanted hymns and clapped their hands, provided the music. Egyptian Deities advertising focused either on the splendor and pageantry of ancient Egypt or the New York City social elite at leisure.
