JOHN HINSHAW'S CIGAR STORE
ca. 1910
John Hinshaw and his wife Ellen lived in Petaluma, California. John's cigar store was located near Main Street in a busy downtown area near the Petaluma River. It was small but very clean and neat, with several framed signs and an unmistakable aroma to entice his customers. The two El Principe De Gales Cigar signs above the cabinets, and the Bull Durham Tobacco poster near the clock, would be very expensive collector's items today. Barely visible near the calendar, and to the left of the Egyptienne Straights sign, is a man seated in the backroom. Old time tobacconist shops were also meeting places for male camaraderie and perhaps a game of poker. Wouldn't you just love to own that gum ball machine sitting on the counter, or the splendid brass cash register behind Mr. Hinshaw?
John David Hinshaw (1847-1926) and his second wife Ellen Laufenburg (1851-1930) lived at 315 Walnut St., Petaluma. John's roots were those of tobacco; he was born in Tobaccoville, North Carolina. The Hinshaw Family Association web site is an excellent source for anyone who wants to know more about John and Ellen.
