A GEM OF A PIRATE
1910

One hundred years ago "Pirate", Pinhead, Teal, Atlas, Rooster and other popular cigarette brands were sold by Chinese street vendors in Shanghai and throughout China, Manchuria and Mongolia. Manufacturers used railroads, camel caravans, and carts pulled by mules to distribute their cigarettes to the far corners of this vast country. Most of these colorful packets contained five cigarettes, and were purchased with One Cash. This small coin had a square hole in the middle, and was the smallest denomination in circulation during the early decades of the 20th Century. Advertising included outdoor posters like the two pictured below, plus calendars and advertising trade cards.
